He came to me with a very specific problem.
He’d met a woman at his cousin’s wedding. They’d danced. They’d talked for an hour by the dessert table. She’d put her number in his phone. And that was four days ago, and he still hadn’t texted her.
“What do I even say?” he asked. “Everything I write sounds either desperate or like a robot.”
He meant that as an insult to robots. I let it go.
What he’d written so far
He showed me his drafts. There were seven of them.
One was a paragraph about how much he enjoyed meeting her, with three exclamation points.
One just said “hey.”
One was a joke about the wedding DJ that only made sense if you’d been standing next to him when it happened.
One asked her out to dinner, with a specific restaurant, date, and time. Four days after meeting her.
What we did
I asked him three questions.
What did you talk about at the dessert table? He said she’d been arguing that the lemon cake was better than the chocolate cake, and he’d disagreed.
What did you like most about her? He said she laughed like she meant it.
What do you actually want? He said he wanted to see her again, but he didn’t want to scare her off.
What we wrote
“Hey, it’s Marcus from the wedding. I’ve been thinking about it and I still say you were wrong about the lemon cake. Want to settle it over coffee sometime?”
That’s it. Short. Specific. A callback to something they shared. A light invitation that’s easy to say yes to.
He read it about thirty times. Then he sent it.
What happened
She wrote back in eleven minutes. He told me it was eleven minutes because he was counting.
“The lemon cake was objectively better and I’ll prove it. Saturday?”
He sent me a screenshot. He added about nine exclamation points of his own.
What I want you to learn from this
The best first text isn’t clever. It’s specific. It reminds her of a moment you shared, it’s short enough to read in a second, and it makes the next step easy.
Most of all, it gets sent. Seven perfect drafts are worth less than one decent text that actually goes out.
And if you need help, you know where to find me. I’m very good at dessert-table follow-ups now.

[question]What’s the hardest text you’ve ever had to send?[/question]
