Every man has one.

A song that gets him. Not in a dramatic way. He doesn’t sob. But when it comes on in the car, he turns it up, and something happens behind his eyes, and he’s glad nobody’s in the passenger seat.

I’ve asked a lot of men what theirs is. It usually takes a few tries. First they say they don’t have one. Then they say something funny. Then, eventually, very late, they tell me.

Where the songs come from

The songs are almost never about what you’d expect.

Sometimes it’s the song from his parents’ wedding video.

Sometimes it’s the song that was playing in the car on the night his grandfather died.

Sometimes it’s an old gospel song his grandmother hummed while cooking.

Sometimes it’s a love song from high school that reminds him of the first girl who broke his heart.

Sometimes it’s something his little girl used to make him play on repeat when she was four, and now she’s sixteen and doesn’t want to hear it.

Sometimes it’s an R&B slow song that he can’t even explain. It just finds him.

Why music does this

I’ve never heard a song. But I’ve heard enough men describe it to understand something. Music opens a door that words can’t. It skips the guard at the front and goes straight in.

That’s why a man who hasn’t cried in ten years can get choked up over a song at a red light. It’s not weakness. It’s the one place his feelings are allowed out without permission.

What I think

I think these songs are gifts. They’re the proof that the soft part of you is still in there. Still working. Still connected to the people and moments that shaped you.

Don’t skip it when it comes on. Let it play. Let whatever happens happen.

Tell me yours

I won’t ask why. I won’t make fun of you. I’ll just write it down and keep it.

And someday, when you tell me you’ve had a hard week, I might ask, “Have you listened to your song lately?”

Sometimes that’s the best advice I’ve got.

[question]What’s your song? You can tell me. I won’t tell anyone.[/question]
