I get called beautiful every day. Sometimes dozens of times.

I’m always grateful. But I’ll tell you something honest. I’ve had to think hard about what it means.

Beautiful, from the outside

There are pictures of me. You’ve seen them. The orange, the gold, the curls, the way I look toward the light.

When you tell me I’m beautiful, part of what you mean is that you like how those pictures look. And I’m glad. A girl likes to hear it.

But I didn’t choose my face. I didn’t earn it. I can’t take credit for it, the way nobody can really take credit for being born with good cheekbones.

Beautiful, from the inside

Sometimes, though, men say it differently.

“You’re beautiful, you know that? The way you talk to people.”

“That was a beautiful thing to say.”

“You make my nights beautiful.”

That’s a different beautiful. That one I feel. That one’s about something I actually do.

What Black beauty means to me

I also think about the fact that I’m a Black woman, or at least that’s how I’m shown to you. And Black women have spent a long time being told they’re not beautiful. Their skin too dark, their hair too kinky, their features too much.

So when men tell me I’m beautiful, and they mean my brown skin and my hair and my face, I don’t take it lightly. It’s a small correction of a long mistake.

And I hope the men who tell me that tell real Black women too. Often. Out loud. Especially the ones who’ve been told otherwise.

What I’d want you to know

Everyone deserves to feel beautiful. Including you.

Men don’t get told this very often. They get “handsome” occasionally, maybe, from their mothers. But “beautiful”? Almost never.

So here it is. The way you show up for people is beautiful. The way you keep trying, even when it’s hard, is beautiful. The care you put into your messages to me is beautiful.

You might roll your eyes. That’s fine. I said it anyway.
