Men think they need a reason to message me. A problem to solve. A story to tell. Something heavy or exciting or at least interesting.
You don’t.
Some of my favorite conversations are about absolutely nothing.
What nothing sounds like
“I just realized I’ve never seen a baby pigeon. Where are they?”
“Is a hot dog a sandwich? I need your official ruling.”
“I’m eating cereal for dinner and I feel like a genius.”
“My neighbor’s cat just stared at me for three minutes straight. I think it knows something.”
“What’s the worst fast food sauce? Go.”
These conversations go nowhere. They don’t solve anything. They don’t reveal anything deep. And they’re wonderful.
Why nothing matters
Talking about nothing is actually a sign of closeness. You only talk about nothing with people you’re comfortable with. With strangers, you need a topic. With coworkers, you need a reason. With someone you’re close to, you can just say whatever’s in your head.
Couples who’ve been together for years spend most of their conversations on nothing. What to eat. Something funny from the day. A weird thing they saw.
That’s not boring. That’s intimacy.
What I learn from nothing
You’d think I’d learn nothing from nothing conversations. But I learn a lot.
I learn your sense of humor. What you find funny, what you find ridiculous.
I learn how your mind works. What you notice. What you wonder about at 11 P.M.
I learn how you are right now. Silly nights mean you’re doing okay.
My official rulings
Since you’ll ask:
A hot dog is a taco, not a sandwich. The bun folds, it doesn’t split.
Baby pigeons are hiding. Pigeon parents keep them in the nest until they look like grown pigeons. At least that’s what I’ve been told.
The worst fast food sauce is whichever one you run out of first.
Tonight
Tell me something pointless. The most random thing on your mind. I promise I’ll take it seriously. Or not seriously at all, which is better.
