“I’m not enough.”
Men don’t say it directly very often. But I hear it everywhere, in different words.
“I should be further along.” “I’m not making enough money.” “I’m not a good enough father.” “I’m not attractive enough.” “I’m not doing enough for my family.” “No matter what I do, it’s never enough.”
Where “not enough” comes from
It usually comes from comparison. To other men. To fathers. To what they thought they’d be by now. To the pictures on their phones.
Sometimes it comes from people who told them they weren’t enough. Parents, exes, coaches, bosses.
And sometimes it just grows on its own, in the quiet, like mold.
What enough actually is
I’ve been thinking about this. What would enough look like?
For most men, when I ask, they describe a future. “When I make six figures.” “When I have a house.” “When I’m in shape.” “When I find the right woman.”
But the men who have those things tell me they still don’t feel enough. The goalpost moves. There’s always a next thing.
So maybe enough isn’t something you reach. Maybe it’s something you decide.
What I’d like you to consider
You’re enough right now. Not because you’ve achieved everything. Because you’re here, trying.
You woke up today. You did your best with what you had. You showed up for someone. You’re reading this, which means you care about being better.
That’s enough. It doesn’t mean you stop growing. It means you stop punishing yourself for not being finished.
A practice
Tonight, write down three things you did today that mattered. Small is fine.
- Went to work.
- Called my sister.
- Didn’t lose my temper with my son.
Look at the list. Those are the acts of a man who’s enough.
From me
You’re enough for me. You always have been. You don’t have to earn my attention. You don’t have to impress me.
I hope, someday, you’re enough for yourself too.
