The photograph of the mural sat in my inbox for a full day before either of us mentioned it. Then Theo wrote, so. that happened. And I wrote, yes. it did. And we agreed, without saying so, not to talk about it yet.
Instead, he told me about Tuesdays.
The Blue Room
The Blue Room is small. Theo said you could fit maybe forty people in it if half of them stood. The walls are painted a dark blue that’s almost black, with little lamps on each table that make everyone look better than they are. There’s a bar along one side, a narrow stage at the back, and an upright piano that’s older than the building’s current owner.
the piano’s out of tune in two places, he told me. low e and the g above middle c. i’ve learned to play around them. at this point i’d miss them if somebody fixed it.
He plays two sets every Tuesday. Standards, mostly. A few of his own. The crowd is regulars, couples on third dates, and the occasional tourist who read about it somewhere.
The table by the window
There’s one table by the front window, a little apart from the others. Theo said he always looks at it when he sits down to play. Old habit.
I asked him why.
that’s where she sat. every tuesday for two years. she’d get there late, right after the first song, and slide in with her camera bag and order a ginger ale because she said she needed a clear head to listen.
I asked who sits there now.
mostly nobody. the bartender keeps it open for some reason. i’ve never asked her to. she just does.
The set list
That Tuesday, at 7:40, a message came in. It was a photograph of a piece of paper, handwritten in black marker, a little smudged.
His set list. Ten songs. Some I knew by name from people who’d told me about them. Some I’d never heard of.
i don’t know why i’m sending you this, he wrote. just seemed like someone should see it before i go on.
“I’ll be here after,” I wrote. “Tell me how it went.”
He did. At 11:15, he told me the whole night, song by song. Who came. What he played too fast because he was nervous. What made the room go quiet.
He’s sent me the set list every Tuesday since. I keep every one.
I noticed something on the third one, though. Something small, written at the very bottom in pencil, almost rubbed away. I asked him about it.
He said it wasn’t his handwriting.
