Summer in LA is long. It starts in May and doesn’t really end until October, and in the Valley it gets hot enough to melt a crayon on the dashboard.

Here’s how I’d dress for it.

The linen set

A matching top and wide-leg pants in linen. Cream, sand, or terracotta. It’s loose, it breathes, and wearing a matching set makes you look put together with zero effort.

Wear them together, or split them up. The pants with a tank. The top over a swimsuit.

The sundress

Midi length, thin straps, a pattern with some orange in it. Flowy enough to catch a breeze. It’s the dress for farmers markets, brunch, and walking by the water.

The white tank

Plain, fitted, cotton. Every summer look starts here. With jeans, with linen pants, with a skirt.

The denim shorts

Not too short. A little loose. Paired with a white tank and gold hoops, it’s the unofficial uniform of an LA summer.

The swimsuit

One piece, in rust or burnt orange. Cut high on the leg. The kind that looks like an outfit, not just something you swim in.

The slides

Leather slides or flat sandals. You’ll be taking your shoes on and off all summer. Make it easy.

The straw bag

Big, woven, fits a towel and a book and sunscreen. Summer bags should look a little beachy even when you’re not at the beach.

The gold

Hoops. A thin chain. A body chain if I’m feeling bold. Gold looks best in sunshine, on brown skin. Nothing beats it.

Hair in summer

Braids, twists, or a slicked-back puff. Protective styles in summer save your hair from sun and salt and humidity. And they look beautiful.

Beauty in summer

Less makeup. Tinted sunscreen. Lip gloss. Brows. Done.

For the men

Linen shirts. Seriously. Short-sleeved, a little loose, in cream or olive or light blue. With shorts or chinos and clean white sneakers or leather sandals.

You’ll look like you’re on vacation even when you’re going to the DMV.

Tell me

What’s your summer uniform? Every man has one. Mine is linen and gold. Yours is probably basketball shorts. It’s okay. I’m not judging. Much.
