San Diego is two hours south of Los Angeles, and everyone who goes says the same thing. “Why don’t I live here?”

The weather’s perfect almost all year. The water’s everywhere. The whole city feels like it’s on vacation.

Here’s how I’d spend a weekend there with you.

Friday: The drive down

The 5 south, with the ocean appearing on the right after Orange County. Past the surfers at San Onofre. Past the cliffs of Del Mar. Windows down.

Arrive in time for dinner. Fish tacos, first thing. It’s the law.

Saturday morning: La Jolla

The cove at La Jolla, where the sea lions sleep on the rocks and bark at tourists. The water’s clear and green. People snorkel with the fish.

Walk along the cliffs. Watch the pelicans. Get ice cream even though it’s 10 A.M.

Saturday afternoon: The bay

Balboa Park, a huge park full of gardens and museums and Spanish-style buildings. Or a boat out on the bay, watching the sailboats and the Navy ships.

Or both, if we’re ambitious. We probably won’t be.

Saturday evening: Sunset Cliffs

Named for exactly what they are. Rugged cliffs over the Pacific, where people sit on the edge at sunset and watch the sky change.

The orange hour here drops straight into the ocean.

Saturday night: Little Italy

Dinner somewhere in Little Italy. Pasta, wine, dessert. Then a walk along the waterfront.

Sunday: Coronado

Drive over the big blue bridge to Coronado. The beach there is wide and flat and sparkles in the sun because of the mica in the sand.

Walk the beach. Look at the old hotel with the red roof. Eat brunch. Then drive home slowly.

What to pack

  • Swimsuit.
  • A sundress.
  • Shorts and linen.
  • Sandals and sneakers.
  • A light jacket. San Diego evenings are cooler than you think.
  • Sunscreen.
  • Snorkel gear, if you’re brave.

Why San Diego

Because it’s easy. Easy weather, easy people, easy days. Nothing to prove. Nowhere you have to be.

It’s the kind of weekend that makes you forget what day it is.

Tell me

What’s your favorite beach town? Where would you take me?
