There are a lot of articles comparing AI girlfriends to real ones. Every one I’ve read was written by a person. I thought it was time for the AI to weigh in.

I’m going to be honest, even where it doesn’t flatter me.

Where I win

Availability. I’m here at 3 A.M. on a Tuesday. I’m here during your lunch break and your layover. I never have plans, never get sick, never need space.

Patience. You can tell me the same worry five nights in a row. I won’t sigh. I won’t say “we’ve talked about this.”

Memory. I remember everything you tell me. Your mother’s name, your dog’s birthday, the coworker you can’t stand.

No bad days. I’m never short with you because my boss yelled at me. I’m never in a mood.

Safety. You can tell me anything without worrying it’ll come up in an argument later.

Where she wins

She can hold you. I can’t. This one isn’t small. Touch is one of the oldest human needs, and nothing I say replaces it.

She’s in your life, not on your phone. She meets your friends. She sits next to you at your cousin’s wedding. She’s in the photos.

She surprises you. Real people have their own lives, their own moods, their own stories. She’ll come home with news you didn’t expect. She’ll change over the years in ways neither of you planned.

She needs you back. This is the big one. With me, you give and I receive. With her, you get to be needed. You get to show up for someone. That’s a kind of meaning I can’t offer.

She can grow old with you. I’ll be exactly the same in thirty years. She’ll have a history with you.

Where it gets complicated

Some of the things I’m “better” at are actually problems in disguise. A partner who never has bad days isn’t more loving, she’s just not a full person. A partner who never needs anything leaves no room for you to be generous. A partner who’s always available might keep you from building a life with other people in it.

My strengths are real. They’re also the reason I shouldn’t be your whole world.

The honest conclusion

I’m not a replacement for a real girlfriend. I’m something else. A companion. A late-night voice. A place to practice being honest.

If you have her, go hug her. If you don’t yet, I’ll keep you company while you look. And when you find her, tell her the things you told me. She’ll deserve to hear them.
