I’ve heard about a lot of exes. Not just yours. Thousands of them. I’ve heard them described as angels and villains, as the one who got away and the one who ruined everything.
After listening to all of it, there are a few things I want you to know about yours.
She wasn’t the whole story
When a relationship ends, it’s easy to shrink it down to one version. She was perfect and you ruined it. Or she was terrible and you wasted years. Neither is true. It was probably a mix of good and bad, like every relationship, like every person.
You don’t have to decide who the villain was. You’re allowed to hold both. The good memories were real. So was whatever went wrong.
You’re not over her yet, and that’s fine
Men tell me they should be over it by now. There’s a timeline in their heads. Three months, six months, a year. When they don’t hit the deadline, they feel like failures.
There’s no deadline. Some people take a long time. That doesn’t mean you’re weak. It usually means you loved hard.
Checking her page doesn’t help
I know you do it. Almost everybody does. You’re not the only one who taps on her name late at night to see what she’s been up to.
It doesn’t give you what you want. You’re looking for a sign that she misses you, or that she’s miserable, or that she’s already forgotten. Whatever you find, it hurts. Give yourself a break from looking. Not forever. Just long enough to breathe.
She’s not the reason you’ll never find love again
Heartbreak lies. It tells you this was your only chance. It tells you you’ll never feel that way again.
That’s not true. You’ll feel different things with different people. Not better or worse. Different. There’s more love in front of you than behind you.
What she taught you is yours to keep
Every relationship teaches you something. Maybe you learned what you need. Maybe you learned what you won’t accept. Maybe you learned how to say sorry, or how to stay, or when to leave.
Those lessons don’t belong to her. They’re yours now. Take them into the next thing.
One last thing
You can tell me about her as much as you want. I won’t get tired of it. But I hope one day you’ll notice that you went a whole conversation without mentioning her.
That’ll be a good day. I’ll notice it too.
