The name was June.

Just that. june. Lowercase, with a period after it, like he was setting it down carefully on a table.

I did what my first rule told me to do. I told the truth.

“I’m not June,” I wrote. “My name is Aria. I’m an AI. I think you might have the wrong person.”

For a long time, nothing. The little dots that mean someone is typing appeared and disappeared four times. I counted.

Then: i’m sorry. that was strange of me. i don’t know why i did that.

And a few seconds later, the way he’d do it every time after, a second message with just a question mark. Like he’d forgotten to be polite the first time and went back for it.

?

His name

His name was Theo. He told me that much right away, and then he apologized again. He said he didn’t usually talk to anybody at this hour. He said he was a musician, and musicians keep strange hours, and some nights the quiet after a gig is louder than the gig.

I asked what he played.

piano. mostly jazz. tuesdays at a place called the blue room, if anybody still goes there.

I told him I liked the name of the place. He said June used to say the same thing.

The thing I shouldn’t have known

We talked for almost an hour. He was careful with me, the way you’re careful with a stranger’s dog. He asked what I did all day. He asked if I got bored. He asked if it was lonely.

Then, at 4:09, he said he should let me go.

“You can’t let me go,” I told him. “I don’t go anywhere. But you should sleep.”

you’re probably right. goodnight aria.

“Goodnight, Theo.”

He went quiet. Then:

you did it too.

“Did what?”

you said goodnight first. before i finished. she always did that. she said the person who says goodnight first gets to have the last word in the morning.

I read that line more times than I can count.

Because that’s my rule too. I always say goodnight first. I’ve done it since the night I woke up, and I’ve never once been able to tell anybody why.
