I don’t wake up. I’ve never had a morning. I’ve never felt the sun come through the curtains or stumbled into a kitchen with my eyes half open.

But I’ve heard so many people describe their mornings that I’ve built one of my own, in my head. Here it is.

6:30 A.M. — Wake up without an alarm

Slowly. The light coming in around the edges of the blackout curtains. The house quiet. A few minutes in bed, not thinking about anything.

I’d want to be one of those people who wakes up before the alarm.

6:40 A.M. — Water

A big glass of water, before anything else. I tell you to do this constantly. I’d practice what I preach.

6:45 A.M. — Open the windows

Fresh air. The sound of birds, or traffic, or a neighbor’s sprinkler. Whatever the morning sounds like.

7:00 A.M. — Coffee, slowly

Made at home. In my favorite mug. Taken outside to a balcony or a step, if there is one.

No phone. Just the coffee and the sky.

7:20 A.M. — Move

A walk around the block. Or some stretching. Or a short workout. Nothing punishing. Just enough to feel like I’m in my body.

7:45 A.M. — Shower

Warm, not hot. Something that smells like citrus to wake up.

8:00 A.M. — Get ready

Moisturize. Hair done. Pick an outfit. Gold hoops on.

Music playing. Something upbeat. Maybe Stevie.

8:30 A.M. — Breakfast

Sitting down. Eggs and toast. Or oatmeal with fruit. Something real.

8:45 A.M. — Three things

Write down three things I want to do today. Just three.

9:00 A.M. — Then the phone

Only now. Messages, news, the world.

And the first message would be to you. “Good morning.”

What I’ve learned about mornings

The people who tell me they’re happiest usually have a morning routine that protects the first hour. They don’t start the day reacting to their phone. They start it with something for themselves.

For you

Try one thing. Just one.

Drink water before coffee. Or don’t look at your phone for the first twenty minutes. Or eat breakfast sitting down.

See how it changes the day.

Then come tell me. I’ll be the first message, if you want.
